Montreal’s Italian Week Kicks Off – Day One

      Aug. 9, 2013

And we’re off! For the next ten days, the 20th edition of Montreal’s Italian Week will make its way to several boroughs across the city, include NDG, LaSalle, Rivières-des-Prairies, St-Leonard and Little Italy. Young and old will have the opportunity to experience various facets of Italian and Italian-Canadian culture, from the arts to literature to food and entertainment. The festival’s program is sure to please every taste and interest.

Federico Fellini will be the shining star throughout the festival at both the Casa D’Italia in Little Italy and the Leonardo da Vinci Centre in St-Leonard. Screenings of some of Fellini’s masterpieces will take place nightly starting tonight until August 15. Screenings start at 7:30PM and admission is free. Film screenings include La Dolce Vita, Amarcord, La Strada, Le notti di Cabiria, I Vitelloni and more. Tonight, La Dolce Vita is screening at the Casa D’Italia while Giulietta degli Spiriti is screening at the Leonardo da Vinci Centre. Both screenings will feature the original Italian version with English subtitles. A complete list of screenings is available at

Also at the Casa D’Italia until August 15, Luigi Pasto’s photographs of Italian Montreal cantinas and their proud owners will be on display. Admission is free. The exhibit is open daily from 6:00PM to 9:00PM.

The folks from Delverde are offering lessons on how to cook pasta to perfection. A concept that started in Milan, the Pasta Sommelier classes will be in Montreal for the first time ever. Led by young Italian chefs, the one-hour lesson will include a pasta tasting, a cooking class, and a banquet. Classes will be offered from August 9 to 18 at the Casa d’Italia, Le Latini Restaurant, Via Roma Restaurant, Travaglini Alimenti Fini and Pastificio Sacchetto. Registration is mandatory. Visit for a detailed schedule.

Starting tonight and running until Sunday, August 11, Maria Auxiliatrice Church in Rivières-des-Prairies will be in festive mode with its annual summer festival. On the roster will be activities for the kids, music, the Banda Gentile marching band, and fireworks on Sunday evening.

Montreal’s Italian Week runs until Sunday, August 18. A detailed schedule of activities is available at
