      Scopa at Montreal’s Italian Week

      Aug. 19, 2013

Hosted by and the Order of the Sons of Italy in Canada, in collaboration with Montreal’s Italian Week, the first edition of SCOPA @ SEMAINE ITALIENNE DE MONTRÉAL was a grand success.

The tournament saw 16 teams square off this past Saturday and Sunday. By 6:00PM on Sunday, the champion team was declared. Alessandro Saraullo and Tony Di Foglio walked away with the gold medal (pictured below with Sons of Italy president Joe Fratino). In second place was the brother team of Nicola Ciaccia and Salvatore Ciaccia. The bronze medal went to Rachelia Mercadante and Mario Lattazio.

The tournament, which took place in the “Scopa tent” during the Italian Week festivities in Little Italy, attracted an eclectic roster of players, from young to old, and not all of Italian origin! One of the quarterfinal matches saw two Italian seniors play against a father and daughter team. Three generations at one table!

When the tournament was not in session, passersby were encouraged to sit down at one of our card tables for a friendly match of Scopa. One of the youngest to sit down and play was a four-year old who gleefully took pointers from her auntie. A group of 20-something friends admitted that they play with their schoolmates at lunch on a daily basis. For some of the folks who sat down to play, it had been years since they picked up a deck of Italian playing cards!

Thank you again to all our participants! See you at next year’s Montreal’s Italian Week!
