      Italianità at Blue Metropolis

      Apr. 21, 2015

Michela MurgiaLiterature will be on the minds of many in Montreal as the Blue Metropolis Annual Literary Festival sets up shop this week. Running from April 20 to 26, the annual festival brings together an impressive line up of authors and writers for a variety of book launches, panel discussions and workshops.

The festival also features some Italian and Italian-Canadian authors.

Tonight (April 21) at 6:30PM, the Italian Cultural Institute of Montreal (1200 Dr. Penfield) will host a round table discussion titled “Shifting and shaping a national identity: transnational writers and pluriculturalism in Italy today” featuring writers Elena Benelli, Linda Morra, and Connie McParland.

Popular Italian author Michela Murgia (Accabadora, Viaggio in Sardegna) will be in town to discuss her writings on Sardegna on Wednesday, April 22, at 6:30PM, at the Italian Cultural Institute of Montreal. The Italian presentation will be hosted by Montreal Professor Claudia Polledri and is free of charge to the public.

Murgia will also be part of a round table discussion on “Writing from an Island: Italian Women in Conversation.” She will sit alongside Italian-Canadian writer Caterina Edwards for this talk. Hosted by Alberto Du Logu, the authors will discuss how being from an island province – Sardegna for Murgia and Sicily for Edwards – has influenced their writing and their attitude towards Italians from the mainland. The round table discussion will take place on Saturday, April 25, from 4:00PM to 5:00PM at Hotel 10 (10 Sherbrooke West). Admission is $8.00.

Following the round table discussion, Caterina Edwards will make her way to the festival’s bookstore – also at Hotel 10 – to ready an excerpt from her crime novel, The Sicilian Wife. The reading will start at 5:30PM. Edwards will officially launch her novel on Friday, April 24, at 6:00PM, as part of the Linda Leith Publishing book launch party.

A new collection of writings from the Association of Italian Canadian Writers will be officially launched at Blue Metropolis on Sunday, April 26, 2015, at 3:30PM, in the Petit Salon at Hotel 10. Writing Cultural Difference: Italian-Canadian Creative and Critical Works features contributors from Canada, Italy, the United States and the United Kingdom. The launch will feature readings by Ralph Alfonso, Domenic Cusmano, Liana Cusmano and Caterina Edwards, with musician Chris Tauchner.
